The Story Of the Time I Was on Japanese TV for a Half Second

Last month I went to Seattle to see the kick off show for Kyary Pamyu Pamyu‘s Nanda Collection world tour. Thanks to a tip from my friend Alex, who let me know that drunks in the bar at Showbox at the Market get inside before the all-ages line outside, we miraculously wound up in the front row. Sorry, tiny girls in the crowd stuck behind me, this 6 foot tall gaijin monster isn’t going anywhere. I gripped that barricade like my life depended on it, and I got so close that I could see Kyary had what looked like a flea bite on her ankle. The show could only be described as a mind-blowing dance-along Lisa Frank acid trip, and the energy and skill of her backup dancers really has to be experienced to be believed.

The next day I woke up to multiple tweets from friends in Japan saying “I saw Pete-san on TV!”. When someone tells you that you’ve spotted on Japanese television but doesn’t give you any context, there’s a moment where you are unsure whether to be excited or alarmed. It turns out the Japanese news shows were doing a segment on Kyary’s tour kicking off in Seattle, and I wound up in some crowd footage. So, it’s less exciting than what I initially hoped for, which was that I’d become some kind of meme and accidentally inspired a “Shibuya Lumberjack” fashion trend, but it’s still pretty damn cool and another strange thing I can tell stories about in interviews.

Thanks to Kana & the IRC room at 91.8 The Fan for finding the video clips, and whoever uploaded these. See if you can spot me! (Hint: Look for the giant bearded white guy who seems blissfully unaware that he looks totally out of place!)

I’m excited to play a set of the latest K-Pop/J-Pop and EDM hits for all the anime ravers! Last year’s was one of the best stages I’ve ever played on, so I’m excited to be returning. I’ll also have a booth in artist alley where I’ll be selling my music, prints, shirts, etc. More details soon!
